Biden Pledges Federal Aid for Florida’s Power Grid Recovery After Hurricanes

President Joe Biden toured hurricane-ravaged areas of Florida on Sunday and announced federal funding to help strengthen the state’s electrical grid as part of a comprehensive recovery effort.

Speaking in St. Petersburg, Biden emphasized unity in times of crisis. “In moments like this, we come together to take care of each other—not as Democrats or Republicans, but as Americans. We are one, United States,” he said.

Biden also unveiled $612 million in funding for six Department of Energy projects across the Southeast, including $94 million for two key projects in Florida.

“This funding will not only restore power but strengthen the region’s power system, reducing the frequency and duration of outages as extreme weather events become more common,” Biden said.

Gainesville Regional Utilities will use part of the funds to enhance storm resilience in north-central Florida, employing advanced tools to speed up power restoration during outages. Meanwhile, private utility developer Switched Source will collaborate with Florida Power and Light to deploy technology that optimizes power flow, unlocking over 200 megawatts of system capacity and improving reliability in areas vulnerable to prolonged outages.
