US President Joe Biden has criticized the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) issuance of a war crimes arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling it “outrageous.”
The ICC also issued arrest warrants for Yoav Gallant, Israel’s former defense minister, and Mohammed Deif, a Hamas commander Israel claims was killed in July. The court stated there were “reasonable grounds” to believe the three men bore “criminal responsibility” for actions during the recent war between Israel and Hamas.
The response to the ICC’s decision has been divided. Several European nations expressed respect for the court’s decisions, while the British government emphasized the importance of its independence. However, the US strongly sided with Israel, with Biden asserting, “Whatever the ICC might imply, there is no equivalence—none—between Israel and Hamas. We will always stand with Israel against threats to its security.”
Both Israel and Hamas have rejected the ICC’s allegations. In a statement, Netanyahu called the ICC’s decision “antisemitic” and likened it to the infamous Dreyfus affair, a historical case of antisemitism in 19th-century France.
“The court in The Hague accuses us of a deliberate policy of starvation,” Netanyahu said. “This, when we have supplied Gaza with 700,000 tons of food to feed the people of Gaza. We issue millions of text messages, phone calls, and leaflets to the citizens of Gaza to get them out of harm’s way—while Hamas terrorists do everything in their power to keep them in harm’s way, including shooting them and using them as human shields.”
Netanyahu reaffirmed that Israel would not recognize the ICC’s jurisdiction or the validity of its rulings.
The situation comes amid ongoing humanitarian concerns in Gaza. The UN recently warned that Palestinians in northern Gaza are “facing diminishing conditions for survival” due to the lack of aid deliveries during an extended siege by Israeli forces.
