Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has announced the state’s plan to raise a N93 billion bond to establish the Benue Digital Infrastructure Company (BDIC).
This initiative aims to tackle insecurity, drive economic growth, and enhance the quality of life for residents.
Speaking through his deputy, Sam Ode, during a Digital Security Town Hall meeting in Makurdi, Governor Alia revealed that the state aims to generate at least N158 billion annually over the next decade, totaling N1.58 trillion. The BDIC project, once fully realized, will represent a significant investment in the state’s digital future. It will focus on providing high-speed internet access, improving digital literacy, and fostering technological innovation throughout Benue State.
Governor Alia stated, “My administration is committed to bridging the digital divide in Benue State while addressing security concerns and boosting the state’s economy.” He further elaborated on the security challenges faced since taking office, noting, “Upon assuming office, I encountered severe security issues, with widespread killings and property destruction. To address this, we have revamped the state’s security framework, enlisted top experts to coordinate security, established the Bureau for Homeland Security, and engaged with all security agency heads to align them with the state’s situation.”
This strategy has contributed significantly to reducing insecurity in the state, and the administration is committed to further improvements. Joseph Har, the special adviser to the governor on security and internal affairs, emphasized the growing insecurity in the state and the need for collective action, leveraging digital technology to combat the threat. “Insecurity has become a severe issue in Benue, as it has globally, and must be addressed head-on,” Har stated. He pointed out the lack of synergy among law enforcement agencies and highlighted efforts to unite them for better cooperation and information sharing.
Har also discussed the profiling of businesses in the state, noting plans to issue security passes and identification tags, including QR codes, to ensure easy identification and prevent the wrongful arrest of legitimate business operators. This digital initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing security and economic development in Benue State.
