A baby girl injured in the stabbing attack at a Sydney mall has been discharged from the hospital.
The nine-month-old daughter of Ashlee Good, who tragically died while shielding her, will continue to receive ongoing care from clinicians, according to a health official.
The baby underwent surgery at Sydney Children’s Hospital after sustaining chest and arm injuries during the incident.
The rampage at Westfield Bondi Junction shopping mall on April 13 claimed the lives of six individuals, five of whom were women.
Joel Cauchi, 40, instilled panic among shoppers when he began attacking people with a long blade. He was later shot dead by police officers.
The incident has deeply shocked Australia, a country where mass killings are uncommon.
Following the announcement of the baby’s discharge from the hospital, thousands of people, including local and national leaders, gathered at a candle-lit vigil in Sydney to pay tribute to the victims of the attack.
Over the weekend, two brothers recounted their efforts to assist Ms. Good and her child during the incident, using shirts from the shop they were in to help stop the bleeding.
One of the brothers shared with 9News Sydney: “We were just shopping when we saw the man approach the woman with the baby, and then we immediately stepped in to help.”
“We decided to run in,” one of the brothers recounted to 9News Sydney. “We ran in, told the guys to lock up the doors, and then the mother came with the baby bleeding from the stabbing. We got them into the store and ensured their safety, then immediately called for help.”
He described how his brother assisted by holding and applying pressure to the baby’s wounds, as well as doing the same for the mother to help stop the bleeding, all while they called for emergency assistance from the ambulance and police.
