Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar says his political ambition is not about becoming president but about building a better Nigeria.
Speaking at an affirmation ceremony for new defectors to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Lagos yesterday, Abubakar represented by Prof. Ola Olateju of Achievers University, Owo emphasised that his priority is good governance and national prosperity.
“Atiku Abubakar’s plan is to build a better Nigeria. So, it’s not about him being the president. It’s about having a good government that will deliver for Nigerians,” Olateju said on his behalf.
Abubakar, who recently resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with other opposition leaders to join the ADC, described the move as a fresh start aimed at repositioning Nigeria.
“It’s no longer politics as usual. It’s a new beginning, a new journey. The must there is for him to see Nigeria deliver as wished by all. We are expecting a better Nigeria that can take care of its citizens,” he said.
He acknowledged the hardship Nigerians face from inflation and fuel subsidy removal but expressed optimism that responsible leadership could restore hope. According to him, the coalition would serve as a vehicle for meaningful change.
On the ADC’s 2027 presidential ticket, Abubakar said the party would allow internal democracy to decide its candidate.
“It is not a thing we can pre-determine. Whoever emerges through free and fair contests, we are all going to support. The point is better Nigeria, not Atiku for President at all costs, not Obi for president at all costs,” he stated.
