Atiku Faces Backlash Over Call for Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has come under heavy criticism following his recent call for the unconditional release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI), a pro-democracy advocacy group, condemned Atiku’s remarks, warning that such statements could undermine public confidence in the rule of law and send the wrong signal about accountability and justice.
In a statement signed by its Director of Strategic Communication, Dr. Tunji Bamidele, the group said Atiku’s position appeared inconsistent with his long-standing advocacy for justice and national unity, urging him to reconsider his comments in the interest of national cohesion.
“Nnamdi Kanu is facing serious charges, including terrorism and treasonable felony,”
Dr. Bamidele said. “These involve allegations of incitement to violence and the destruction of property. The matter is before a competent court, and the legal process must be allowed to run its course.”
DWI expressed concern that Atiku’s call could be misconstrued as encouraging disregard for judicial processes, especially in a politically sensitive matter like Kanu’s case.
“By calling for Kanu’s unconditional release, there is a risk of undermining the judicial process and the efforts of those working to maintain peace and security,” the group warned.
The statement emphasised that while political leaders have the right to express opinions, public commentary on ongoing court cases should be guided by caution and respect for the sanctity of legal institutions.
The group further called on Nigerians to focus national conversations on peace, reconciliation, and unity, rather than politicising ongoing legal proceedings.
“We must remain committed to building a country where the law applies equally to everyone. That is the only way to ensure long-term peace and stability,” the statement added.
Atiku had recently urged the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu as part of a broader move toward national reconciliation — a position that has since sparked mixed reactions across the political spectrum.
