Atiku Dumps PDP Over ‘Irreconcilable Differences’

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing irreconcilable differences and a deviation from the party’s founding principles.

In a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area, Adamawa State, Atiku announced his immediate withdrawal from the party he co-founded over two decades ago.

“It is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” Atiku wrote. “However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”

He expressed appreciation for the political opportunities the PDP provided, including his two-term tenure as Vice President and his emergence as presidential candidate in 2019 and 2023.

“As a founding father of this esteemed party, it is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged,” the letter read.

Atiku ended the letter with best wishes for the party and its leadership, bringing an end to his long and influential association with Nigeria’s main opposition platform. His exit marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
