At Least 10 Dead, 15 Injured in Colombia Landslide as Rescue Efforts Continue

At least 10 people have died and 15 others were injured after a landslide struck a rural area in northwest Colombia, authorities confirmed on Tuesday. The disaster occurred in Antioquia province, which has been battered by days of heavy rain.

Governor Andrés Julián Rendón announced the fatalities in a statement on social media platform X, adding that emergency crews are still searching through the debris for possible survivors. “With deep sadness, we report that a landslide has left at least 10 people dead and 15 injured. Search and rescue efforts continue at the scene,” he wrote.

The landslide, triggered by persistent rainfall, buried part of a roadway and several vehicles under thick mud and debris. Firefighters, military personnel, and local authorities have been deployed to the scene, working around the clock to clear the area and assist victims. Images shared online show responders digging through the earth as residents look on.

Officials have warned that continued rain poses further risks of landslides and flash flooding. Residents living in high-risk zones have been urged to evacuate if needed and to stay vigilant as adverse weather persists.

President Gustavo Petro expressed condolences to the victims’ families and commended rescue teams for their swift action. “Our thoughts are with the families affected by this tragedy. We will continue to support the response efforts in Antioquia,” he said.

Landslides are a common threat in Colombia’s mountainous terrain, particularly during the rainy season when waterlogged slopes can easily collapse, putting communities in peril.
