The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a fresh ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding immediate implementation of the 2009 FG/ASUU agreement or face a nationwide industrial action.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, ASUU President Dr. Chris Piwuna expressed deep frustration over what he described as the government’s continued neglect of Nigeria’s public university system.
“These issues are not new,” Piwuna stated. “They speak to the government’s persistent neglect and lack of commitment to the education sector.”
He highlighted nine unresolved issues, including:
- The stalled renegotiation of the 2009 agreement (on hold since 2017),
- Withheld salaries of lecturers from the 2022 strike period,
- Problems with the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS),
- Non-release of revitalisation funds and earned academic allowances,
- Failure to honour promises like the proposed ₦150 billion injection into universities and the regularisation of allowances by 2026.
Piwuna also decried what he called “marginalisation and victimisation” of union members, specifically citing Kogi State University and Lagos State University as hotspots of concern.
The union warned that unless concrete actions are taken swiftly by the Federal Government, it will be left with no choice but to resume industrial action to press home its demands.
