The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has urged the Federal Government to resolve lingering issues that led to its recent two-week strike within one month, warning that failure to act could trigger an indefinite strike.
Prof. Adeola Egbedokun, ASUU Zonal Coordinator for Akure, made the appeal on Thursday while briefing journalists at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) ASUU Secretariat in Ile-Ife. He noted that the warning strike was suspended in goodwill and solidarity with students, parents, labour unions, and civil society groups.
Egbedokun highlighted unresolved matters, including the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement, payment of salary and promotion arrears, release of unremitted third-party deductions, and an end to the victimisation of members at Lagos State University, Kogi State University, and the Federal University of Technology Owerri.
He also called for sustainable funding and revitalisation of the university system, criticising the government’s inconsistent policies on establishing new universities despite a seven-year moratorium. According to him, most new institutions lack adequate facilities and qualified staff, while first-generation universities maintain higher academic standards.
“The government must live up to its word. Most of these newly established universities admit thousands of students into a few classrooms without proper facilities or offices for lecturers,” Egbedokun said.
ASUU leaders present at the briefing included Prof. Anthony Odiwe (OAU), Prof. Bamidele Mogaji (FUTA), Prof. Sola Afolayan (EKSU), Prof. Babatope Ogundare (BOUESTI), Dr. Abayomi Fagbuagun (UNIMED), Dr. Abraham Oladebeye (FUOYE), and Dr. Bosun Ajisafe (AFUED).
