Aregbesola Warns APC: Defections No Guarantee of 2027 Win

National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has warned the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) that the influx of governors into the party does not assure electoral victory in the 2027 general elections.

Aregbesola gave the warning while speaking at the launch of a book written by the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary. He dismissed claims that the APC’s growing number of governors automatically positions it for victory in 2027, describing such assertions as misleading and unsupported by Nigeria’s recent electoral history.

According to him, outcomes from past elections clearly show that governors do not determine electoral success for political parties.

“There is this assertion going around which is worrisome,” Aregbesola said. “They say because about 30 governors are supporting a party, that party is going to win the election. Recent statistics in Nigeria do not support this.”

He cited the 2023 general elections, particularly results from the South-West and South-East, to challenge the belief that governors define election outcomes.

“I will use the results from two zones South-West and South-East to puncture this argument that governors define electoral victory for parties,” he stated.

Aregbesola noted that despite the APC having an overwhelming number of governors in the South-West during the last election, the party secured only about 55 per cent of the votes, underscoring that political dominance at the gubernatorial level does not automatically translate to nationwide electoral success.

He urged political actors to focus more on democratic values, public trust and credible engagement with voters rather than relying on elite alignments to predict election outcomes.
