Abdullahi Ganduje, the national chair of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has set his sights on winning the governorship elections in Osun and Oyo states to solidify the party’s dominance in the south-west geopolitical zone.
Ganduje made the declaration on Sunday in Akure, Ondo State, after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the APC as the winner of the Ondo governorship election. Aiyedatiwa secured a sweeping victory, winning all 18 local government areas with 366,781 votes, defeating his closest rival Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 117,845 votes. Nejo Adeyemi of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) finished third with 4,138 votes.
Speaking alongside governors Babagana Zulum of Borno and Hope Uzodimma of Imo, Ganduje expressed the APC’s ambition to create political unity across the south-west. “Our next target now is this geo-political zone—the south-west. You know we are good at getting the target. We will do all that is possible to bring them into the fold,” Ganduje said.
The APC currently governs four of the six south-west states: Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, and Ekiti. Winning Osun and Oyo would complete the party’s dominance in the region. The next Osun governorship election is scheduled for 2026, with the Oyo election to follow in 2027. Ganduje’s comments signal the APC’s strategic planning to strengthen its position in the key geopolitical zone.
