APC Begins Nationwide Congresses Monday Ahead of 2027 Elections

The All Progressives Congress (APC) will on Monday begin a nationwide process to elect its party officials, starting with ward, local government and state congresses, and culminating in a national convention by the end of March, as preparations intensify for the 2027 general election.

This development comes as the party’s ongoing electronic registration (e-registration) of members across the country, which commenced earlier this month, is scheduled to end tomorrow.

The decision was reaffirmed at a meeting held on Sunday night in Abuja by the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), following a briefing from the National Working Committee (NWC) led by the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda.

At the meeting, both the governors and the party leadership underscored the need to maintain internal cohesion and ensure a transparent, credible and inclusive process in the election of party officials at all levels — ward, local government, state, zonal and national.

The timetable for the congresses had earlier been approved by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) at its December meeting, with the entire process expected to climax with the APC National Convention by the end of March.

Governors present at the meeting included Hope Uzodimma (Imo), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Uba Sani (Kaduna), Mohammed Idris (Kebbi), Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi), Ahmad Aliyu (Sokoto), Usman Ododo (Kogi), Hyacinth Alia (Benue), Agbu Kefas (Taraba), Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos) and Umar Bago (Niger), among others.

PGF Communiqué

In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the PGF reaffirmed its commitment to deepening internal democracy, strengthening party structures, and promoting transparency, accountability and inclusiveness within the APC nationwide.

The forum welcomed the briefing on the party’s digital membership update, noting significant growth in registrations, increased youth participation, and the integration of National Identity Number (NIN) verification, which it said would improve data-driven planning and grassroots engagement.

The governors also endorsed the NEC-approved timetable and institutional framework for the forthcoming ward, local government, state, zonal congresses and the national convention. They stressed the need for transparent and coordinated financial management to ensure fairness across all states, including those not governed by the APC.

The PGF further reiterated its commitment to party unity and discipline, announced plans for strategic state visits beginning with Taraba State, and formally welcomed the governors of Taraba and Plateau into the forum.

Congress Timetable

According to the 2025/2026 activities schedule released late last year by APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, the party’s membership e-registration, which began in December 2025, will officially end tomorrow.

The schedule, released via Basiru’s verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, indicates that notices of congresses will be issued to state and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapters on Monday, February 2, 2026.

Purchase and submission of forms for ward and local government congresses will take place between February 4 and February 9. Screening committees will be inaugurated on February 10, while screening of aspirants will run from February 11 to February 13.

Ward congresses are scheduled for February 18, with appeals slated for February 19. Local government congresses, including the election of three delegates — one of whom must be female — to the national convention, will hold on February 20, with appeals on February 21.

At the state level, purchase of forms for state executive positions will run from February 23 to February 27, while state congresses are fixed for March 7. Appeals arising from state congresses will be heard between March 9 and March 11.

Zonal activities will begin with the purchase and submission of forms from March 12 to March 17, followed by screening on March 19 and March 20. Zonal congresses will take place on March 21 across the six geopolitical zones.

The designated zonal centres are Ibadan (Southwest), Enugu (Southeast), Rivers/Cross River (Southsouth), Kaduna (Northwest), Gombe/Bauchi (Northeast) and Nasarawa (Northcentral). Appeals from zonal congresses are scheduled for March 23.

The timetable shows that the APC National Convention will be held between March 25 and March 28, marking the conclusion of the party’s congress process ahead of the 2027 elections.
