Anthony Joshua Back in Gym Weeks After Accident

British-Nigerian heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has resumed training in the gym weeks after surviving a car accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two close members of his team.

The crash occurred on December 29 along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State. The deceased were Kevin Latif Ayodele, Joshua’s personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, his strength and conditioning coach. Joshua sustained minor injuries and was discharged from a Lagos hospital hours into the New Year.

Nineteen days after the accident, Joshua shared videos from the UK of himself sparring, strength training, swimming, and spinning, describing the sessions as “mental strength therapy,” suggesting the workouts are part of his recovery process.

The 36-year-old’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, said Joshua would take the time needed to recover physically and emotionally before deciding on his future in boxing. Hearn noted that talks of a potential fight with former world champion Tyson Fury were premature.

Joshua returned to the UK with the remains of his late colleagues and attended funeral prayers for Ayodele and Ghami at a mosque in London.
