Aliko Dangote Appointed Pioneer Chairman of ECOWAS Business Council

Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Chairman of the Dangote Group, has been named the pioneer Chairman of the ECOWAS Business Council (EBC), the regional bloc’s independent platform aimed at empowering the private sector and promoting economic integration across West Africa.

The appointment was announced on Wednesday by ECOWAS Commission President, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, during the opening of the 95th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers in Abuja. Touray cited Dangote’s extensive business experience in West Africa and across the continent as a key reason for the selection.

The EBC is designed to bridge the gap between private sector actors and policymakers, facilitating dialogue, boosting intra-regional trade, and encouraging investment. Touray noted that initiatives to promote regional investment, such as Senegal Invest, the West African Economic Summit in Nigeria, and Invest in District Savanes in Côte d’Ivoire, are gaining momentum. He expressed confidence that regional business leaders, supported by figures like Dangote, can drive community development when given proper incentives and opportunities.

Key items on the Council’s agenda include the annual work programme and budget of ECOWAS institutions, financial status updates, implementation of the community levy protocol, and reports from the Auditor General and Audit Committee.

In related remarks, Touray commended Nigeria for its swift intervention in halting an attempted military takeover in Benin Republic, saying the country’s rapid deployment of support forces was vital in protecting democracy in the subregion. “For the speed and commitment shown, Nigeria deserves a standing ovation. This is what regional solidarity should look like if we are determined to protect democracy,” he said.
