The federal government has announced that the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline project will be completed by the first quarter of 2025.
This update was shared by Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, as conveyed by the company’s spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, yesterday,
During a site visit by three cabinet ministers to inspect the River Kaduna crossing milestone of the project, Kyari reiterated the project’s timely completion.
The ministers in attendance were Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy; Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation; and Ekperikpe Ekpo, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas).
Kyari emphasized the commitment to the project’s schedule: “Without promising too much, we assure you that this project will be delivered on schedule. Our mission is to work towards delivering it by December this year. But we are confident this project will be delivered by 1st Quarter of 2025.”
Highlighting the project’s strategic importance, Kyari noted that the NNPC is funding the project through its balance sheet, recognizing its significant value to Nigeria’s economy.
At the site, Edun hailed the AKK gas pipeline as the “pipeline of prosperity,” underscoring its importance to President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He stated, “The AKK gas pipeline is crucial for this administration and its delivery is in line with Mr. President’s strategy of bringing prosperity to the people.”
Idris added that the project is a clear indicator that the federal government’s “Decade of Gas” initiative is fully underway. “Nigerians should be proud of the AKK gas pipeline project. With the delivery of this project, the prosperity that Mr. President is always talking about is unravelling right here before our eyes,” he remarked.
Echoing these sentiments, Ekpo mentioned that the gas pipeline is part of the government’s broader efforts to harness the nation’s abundant gas resources, aiming to improve power generation, revive struggling businesses, and create jobs across the country.
In April 2023, Kyari had initially projected that the pipeline project would become operational by the third quarter of 2023.
