AFCON 2025: Eagles Beat Algeria, Set Up Morocco Semi-Final Clash

Nigeria’s Super Eagles booked a place in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a convincing 2–0 victory over Algeria at the Grand Stade de Marrakech on Saturday.

Algeria, who had conceded just one goal throughout the tournament before the quarter-final, were undone by Nigeria’s sustained pressure and clinical finishing in the second half. The win sets up a blockbuster semi-final showdown between the Super Eagles and tournament hosts, Morocco.

Despite dominating possession and creating the better chances, Nigeria went into the break goalless. However, the breakthrough came just two minutes after the restart when Victor Osimhen rose highest to head home a precise cross from Bruno Onyemaechi in the 47th minute.

Nigeria doubled their advantage 10 minutes later as Akor Adams finished calmly with a right-footed strike in the 57th minute, effectively sealing the contest and capping an impressive all-round display by the Super Eagles.

With the victory, Nigeria now look well-positioned to push for a fourth continental title, though they face a stern test against hosts Morocco in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, in the final quarter-final match, Egypt edged Ivory Coast 3–2, eliminating the defending champions. The result further confirmed Egypt’s historical dominance over the Elephants at AFCON, having now won 11 of their 12 meetings since they first clashed 56 years ago, with Ivory Coast recording just one victory.

Egypt will face Senegal on Wednesday in Tangiers, with the winner set to meet either Nigeria or Morocco in the final four days later. The Pharaohs are chasing a record-extending eighth AFCON title, as Mohamed Salah continues his quest for a first Africa Cup of Nations winners’ medal.
