In a pivotal encounter at AFCON 2023, the Super Eagles of Nigeria triumphed over Guinea-Bissau with a 1-0 scoreline, earning them passage to the tournament’s round of 16.
The match unfolded with high stakes, as both teams sought advancement in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Buoyed by their earlier victory against Ivory Coast, Jose Peseiro’s men entered the game with confidence, making strategic changes to the lineup, including Kenneth Omeruo captaining the side and Joe Aribo stepping in for Alex Iwobi. Despite Alhassan Yusuf’s absence due to injury, the Super Eagles were determined to secure their spot in the knockout stage.
From the early minutes, Victor Osimhen demonstrated Nigeria’s offensive intentions, though his initial attempt failed to trouble the Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper.
The Wild Dogs, aware that a win was essential for their progression, maintained composure and showcased resilience against the Super Eagles’ early pressure.
In the 37th minute, Nigeria received a fortunate breakthrough when Opa Sangante inadvertently scored an own goal while attempting to thwart Moses Simon’s cross, with Osimhen lurking for a tap-in.
Despite opportunities for Osimhen to extend the lead, the first half concluded with Nigeria holding a 1-0 advantage.
The second half witnessed continued efforts from both sides. Simon missed a golden opportunity, and Osimhen had a goal disallowed by VAR for offside in the 62nd minute.
Peseiro made tactical substitutions, bringing in Alex Iwobi, but the substitute’s attempt at the edge of the box went wide.
Nigeria’s second-place finish in Group A, accumulating seven points, was confirmed as Equatorial Guinea secured a convincing 4-0 victory over hosts Cote D’Ivoire, topping the group on goal difference.
Guinea-Bissau, already eliminated before the match, saw their disappointing campaign come to an end with three defeats.
Looking ahead, the Super Eagles are set to face the runners-up from Group C—Senegal, Guinea, or Cameroon—in the round of 16 at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan on Saturday.
The stage is set for an exciting continuation of Nigeria’s AFCON journey.
