Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, revealed on Sunday that he has been receiving threatening calls from unknown parties opposed to his recent reforms in the power sector.
Speaking on the ‘Political Circuit’ program in Ibadan, Adelabu marked his first anniversary in office and discussed the resistance he has encountered.
Adelabu acknowledged the difficulties faced by his predecessors, attributing them to organized sabotage and criminal activities aimed at hindering progress in the sector.
Despite these challenges, he reported significant improvements, noting that Nigeria’s electricity generation capacity has increased from 4,000MW to 5,155MW within his first year.
Reflecting on past achievements, Adelabu pointed out that it took over 25 years to add 2,000MW to the grid, whereas his tenure has already contributed an additional 1,000MW. His goal is to reach 6,000MW by the end of the year with continued support from the Federal Government.
He detailed the reforms undertaken, including comprehensive diagnostics, legislative changes, and supportive policies to improve market conditions and infrastructure. Adelabu emphasized the need for collective efforts to protect power assets, manage electricity payments, and avoid energy theft to ensure the sustainability of the sector’s progress.
