The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, made this announcement on Tuesday at the plenary.
In response, Lawan urged all senators to attend the plenary so that the Acting CJN may undergo the necessary screening for substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria eligibility.
He said, “Distinguished colleagues, Wednesday, September 21, 2022, is fixed for screening and possible confirmation of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria.
“Please, as usual, we all need to be at the plenary during the screening exercise.”
After Tanko Muhammad’s resignation as the nation’s chief justice in June 2022, Ariwoola was named the acting CJN.
Muhammad resigned after 14 Supreme Court justices accused the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) of corruption and allegedly abdicating his duties in that capacity.
The letter for confirmation of Justice Ariwoola as Chief Justice of Nigeria was received by the Senate on Tuesday from the President, Muhammadu Buhari.
The Senate could not consider the request as it adjourned for the annual long recess the following day, Wednesday, July 27, 2022.
