Former Senate Leader Ali Ndume has commended President Bola Tinubu for fulfilling his pledge to increase the salaries of Nigerian Armed Forces personnel, urging military officers to intensify efforts against insurgency, kidnapping and banditry.
Ndume, who represents Borno South Senatorial District and formerly chaired the Senate Committee on Army, gave the commendation in a statement issued at the weekend.
The Presidency had announced a new salary package for military personnel, with officers above the rank of colonel, including brigadier generals, major generals, lieutenant generals and generals, receiving a 30 per cent increase.
Personnel from colonel down to warrant officer are to receive a 50 per cent increase, while those from private to staff sergeant are expected to get an 80 per cent increase.
According to a statement attributed to presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the adjustment will raise the annual salary bill for Armed Forces personnel from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, benefiting more than 250,000 personnel.
The Director of Defence Information, Maj-Gen. Samaila Uba, reportedly confirmed the implementation of the salary review to defence correspondents on Friday.
Reacting, Ndume praised Tinubu for keeping his promise, saying the move would help boost the morale of military personnel.
“Making a pronouncement is one thing; redeeming your pledge is a different ball game entirely.
“President Tinubu has shown, time and time again, that he keeps to his word. It is heartwarming to note that the salary increment he promised the Nigerian Army has been redeemed.
“I want to urge our officers to redouble their efforts to curtail insecurity, since the present administration is doing everything to boost their morale. They should do more now that they also have more troops on the ground following the recent recruitment.
“The activation of the Army Aviation would also go a long way in complementing the efforts of the Air Force, now that we also have attack helicopters in the six geopolitical zones.”
The former Senate Leader said the administration had demonstrated commitment to tackling insecurity through measures including funding for arms and ammunition procurement and initiatives to improve the welfare of Armed Forces personnel.
He also renewed his call for stronger coordination between the infantry and the Nigerian Air Force in the fight against insurgency and banditry.
