Amaechi: I’ll Back Tinubu If Petrol Falls to ₦600

African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared that he would withdraw from Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ticket and campaign for President Bola Tinubu if petrol sells for ₦600 per litre.

Amaechi made the declaration on Friday while appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today, as he questioned the Tinubu administration’s claim that its economic reforms were beginning to improve living conditions for Nigerians.

The former Rivers State governor said he would personally visit a filling station to verify the price of petrol and take the political step if the price had dropped to ₦600.

“I will go tomorrow morning to the petrol station to buy fuel, I will go myself, if fuel has come down to 600, I will campaign for President Tinubu,” Amaechi said.

“If fuel comes down to 600 tomorrow, I will campaign for Tinubu.”

He challenged anyone who doubted his pledge to accompany him with a camera to verify the price.

“If you doubt me, come with your camera to my house, and I will go to the filling station and buy fuel, and I, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi will withdraw as a vice presidential candidate of Atiku and campaign for President Tinubu, if it has come down,” he said.

Amaechi is Atiku’s running mate on the ADC ticket for the 2027 presidential election, while Tinubu is seeking another term on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former transportation minister made the remark while questioning whether Nigerians were already experiencing the economic improvements highlighted by Tinubu in his Independence Day address.

“It is about believability; who do you believe?” Amaechi asked.

“Has any price come down, has anything changed?”

Petrol prices have remained a major political issue ahead of the 2027 election following increases after the removal of fuel subsidy in 2023.

Amaechi has argued that lower energy costs would ease pressure on transportation, food and other household expenses.
