The powerful nor’easter that battered the Northeast over the weekend is weakening, with only minor weather impacts expected Monday as the storm gradually moves out of the region.
The storm claimed at least one life in New York City. Police said a 56-year-old man was killed Saturday afternoon after being struck by a falling tree while walking through a parking lot in Brooklyn.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani identified the victim as Leighton Brown, an employee of the New York City Housing Authority.
The nor’easter is expected to continue weakening Monday as it moves slowly northeast from Long Island toward Massachusetts before reaching the Gulf of Maine by Tuesday.
Light rain is expected to linger across parts of New England as moisture continues to circulate around the departing storm.
Conditions are expected to improve more quickly farther south, with New York City, Long Island and New Jersey forecast to see drier weather by mid-to-late Monday afternoon.
The improving conditions follow a weekend of heavy rain, strong winds and coastal flooding across parts of the Northeast. The storm also toppled hundreds of trees in New York City and prompted states of emergency in parts of New York and New Jersey.
