Suspect Charged in UnitedHealthcare CEO’s Murder Awaits Extradition to New York

Luigi Mangione, 26, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, according to a court docket filed Monday in New York. Additional charges include possession of a loaded firearm, criminal possession of a weapon, and possession of a forged instrument.

The forged instrument charge pertains to a fake New Jersey driver’s license Mangione allegedly used to check into a hostel on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. He is currently in the custody of the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, awaiting extradition to New York.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s office confirmed the charges, though court documents detailing the allegations will remain sealed until Mangione’s appearance in a New York court.

Mangione was arrested earlier Monday in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after being identified by an employee at a McDonald’s. The employee recognized him from police-circulated photographs of the suspect in what authorities have described as a “brazen, targeted” attack in Midtown Manhattan on December 4.

Following his arrest, Mangione was charged in Pennsylvania with five offenses, including carrying a firearm without a license, forgery, providing false identification to authorities, and possessing instruments of crime, according to a criminal complaint.

The Pennsylvania complaint alleges that Mangione carried a ghost gun—a firearm without a serial number—and lied about his identity to law enforcement. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that the recovered weapon, along with a suppressor, was “consistent with the weapon used in the murder.”

Mangione’s mugshot was released Monday evening by the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, as authorities continue preparations for his transfer to New York to face charges.
