President Biden Congratulates Trump on Election Victory, Emphasizes Smooth Transition and Unity

President Joe Biden spoke with former President Donald Trump by phone on Wednesday to congratulate him on his election victory, according to a statement from the White House.

“President Biden expressed his commitment to a smooth transition and stressed the importance of working together to unify the country,” the White House statement read. Biden also invited Trump to meet with him at the White House, and Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung confirmed that the meeting “will take place shortly.”

In a statement, Cheung shared that Trump appreciated the call, adding, “President Joe Biden called President Donald J. Trump to congratulate him on his victory and extended an invitation to the White House to ensure a smooth transition. President Trump looks forward to the meeting.”

Biden also reached out to Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday to commend her on “her historic campaign,” the White House noted.

Following Harris’s concession speech that afternoon, Biden released a statement honoring Harris, calling her a “tremendous partner and public servant full of integrity, courage, and character.”

“Amid extraordinary circumstances, she led a historic campaign that showed what’s possible with a strong moral compass and a vision for a more free, just, and opportunity-filled America,” Biden said, adding that selecting Harris as his running mate had been “the best decision” of his campaign.

“Her story represents the best of America’s story,” Biden concluded. “And as she made clear today, I have no doubt she will continue to inspire.”
