Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President of Nigeria, has congratulated Donald Trump on his victory in the U.S. presidential election. Trump, the Republican Party’s candidate, defeated Vice President Kamala Harris of the Democratic Party on Wednesday, securing the presidency as the 47th leader of the United States. This win was celebrated globally, with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and other world leaders offering their congratulations.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Abubakar lauded Trump’s political journey, calling it “an inspiring parable of courage in the face of adversity.” He expressed optimism that Trump would continue to promote credible elections globally and fight against anti-democratic forces.
Abubakar also emphasized the significance of electoral integrity, urging Trump to advocate for free and fair elections in Nigeria. “The lesson for us in Nigeria is the integrity of the process that ensures a credible outcome,” he stated, adding that Nigerians hope for Trump’s commitment to upholding democratic values worldwide.
A veteran political figure, Abubakar was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election. At 77, he remains resolute in his presidential ambitions, stating he will continue his run as long as he is able, with the next Nigerian election slated for 2027.
