David DePape Sentenced to Life in Prison for Hammer Attack on Paul Pelosi

David DePape was sentenced to life in prison without parole on Tuesday for the hammer attack against Paul Pelosi, following a jury’s conviction on charges including false imprisonment, residential burglary, threatening a public official’s family member, and aggravated kidnapping.

Before sentencing, DePape’s attorneys requested a new trial, but the motion was denied. DePape had previously received a 30-year federal sentence in May for attempting to hold former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi hostage and attacking her husband with a hammer.

In the state trial, DePape was found guilty of breaking into the Pelosi home in San Francisco, searching for Nancy Pelosi, who was not present at the time.

The Pelosi family expressed in a statement that the state sentencing provided “some measure of legal justice” and hoped it sent a clear message that political violence against public officials or their families would not be tolerated. Paul Pelosi, in a letter to San Francisco County Judge Harry Dorfman, described the lasting physical and mental impacts of the attack, including ongoing balance issues and daily headaches, and emphasized his family’s ongoing trauma.

“Since the violent break-in and shouts of ‘where’s Nancy?’ echoed in my bedroom two years ago, not a day goes by without thinking of this assault and its trauma,” Paul Pelosi wrote. “For these reasons, my entire family joins me in requesting the maximum sentence for the defendant.”
