Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has urged officials from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) to enhance their efforts in reducing the number of out-of-school children. Wike made this call during a visit from UBEC’s Secretary, Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, and other commission members in Abuja.
Wike emphasized the need for a focus on school construction and renovation initiatives within the FCT, which he believes will help address the issue of children wandering the streets—a situation that poses significant security risks.
In response to a land request from UBEC officials, Wike asserted that the FCT Administration would only allocate land to individuals or organizations that demonstrate a genuine capacity for immediate development, rather than those who might sell the land or leave it undeveloped for years. He expressed concern over the frequent occurrence of idle land allocations, urging that when land is allocated, development must commence promptly. He noted that this approach would also help mitigate illegal activities, as hoodlums often occupy undeveloped areas.
“UBEC should be focused on tackling the problem of out-of-school children, as insecurity cannot be effectively addressed if children are left at home or roaming the streets,” Wike added.
Earlier in the meeting, Dr. Bobboyi highlighted that the visit was primarily to follow up on the land request submitted to the minister. He also urged Wike to assist commission officials in securing housing for their retirement years.
