Obasanjo: Nigeria’s Struggles Are Due to Mismanagement, Not God’s Will

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, speaking at the 40th anniversary of the Methodist Archdiocese of Abuja, emphasized that Nigeria’s struggles are self-inflicted and not God’s intention. He highlighted the country’s abundant natural resources, such as crude oil, fertile land, and the Rivers Niger and Benue, which should enable success, similar to how Egypt benefits from the Nile. Obasanjo stressed that the issue lies in poor management, not a lack of blessings.

He urged Nigerians, including leaders and clergy, to pray for the nation’s healing and repent for squandering God’s gifts. “If we humble ourselves and seek Him, He will heal our land,” Obasanjo said.

President Bola Tinubu, represented by Mr. Nyesom Wike, praised the Methodist Church for its role in promoting social justice, education, and unity in Nigeria over its 183 years of presence in the country. He encouraged the Church to continue its compassionate mission in the face of Nigeria’s challenges.

Prelate Dr. Oliver Aba, in his sermon, called for gratitude and patience, reminding Nigerians of God’s promise of a better future, drawing from the biblical story of the 10 healed lepers. According to the  News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Several prominent leaders, including Obasanjo, Yakubu Gowon, Goodluck Jonathan, and President Tinubu, were honored with the Knights of John Wesley award during the event.
