The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is in the midst of a deepening leadership crisis, with governors elected under the party’s platform scheduled to meet tomorrow in a bid to find solutions. The party has splintered into two factions, one led by Yayari Ahmed Mohammed and another by acting National Chairman Iliya Umar Damagum, intensifying internal conflicts.

Tensions rose following the suspension of National Legal Adviser Adeyemi Ajibade and National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba by a faction of the National Working Committee (NWC) under Damagum’s leadership. In response, another faction loyal to Ologunagba suspended Damagum and National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu.

On Friday, Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja issued a restraining order, preventing Damagum’s removal as acting national chairman until December 2025, escalating the conflict further.

The PDP had initially planned to hold a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on October 24 to elect a new national chairman to replace former chairman Dr. Iyorchia Ayu. However, with the party in disarray, the governors’ upcoming meeting is pivotal. Options on the table include dissolving the entire NWC and installing a caretaker committee or proceeding with the NEC meeting to elect Ayu’s successor.
