NAFDAC Staff Initiate Indefinite Strike Over Unresolved Welfare Issues

The Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government-Owned Companies (SSASCGOC), affiliated with the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has initiated an indefinite strike affecting the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) due to unresolved welfare concerns.

The union has outlined key demands, including a review of the 2024 promotion exam results, the appointment of directors for public affairs and special duties, and reforms to the promotion examination content. They also seek the establishment of a psychology officer cadre, settlement of pending burial expenses, provision of life insurance, a repatriation allowance, and the clearing of outstanding salary arrears from 2022.

TUC Secretary Ejor Michael stated that the strike follows a 14-day ultimatum issued on September 20, 2024, which went unanswered by NAFDAC management. A congress held on October 4 discussed the issues further, but the lack of resolution led to the strike beginning on October 7, 2024.

In their announcement, the union instructed all staff to cease operations, remove personal belongings from NAFDAC offices, and restrict entry during the strike. They emphasized that the action would continue until all demands are met.

“After careful deliberation, Congress unanimously resolved to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike across all NAFDAC formations, commencing Monday, 7th October 2024,” the statement read. The union expressed dissatisfaction with NAFDAC management’s failure to address critical issues and directed staff to withdraw their services.

Staff have been advised to clear personal belongings from their offices, as access to NAFDAC premises will be prohibited during the strike. SSASCGOC State and Zonal Coordinators are tasked with ensuring compliance with these directives.

“Dear Comrades, your cooperation is greatly treasured to ensure the effectiveness of this indefinite nationwide strike action. We will not relent until all issues are satisfactorily addressed,” the union concluded.
