The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding the resolution of longstanding issues stemming from the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement. In a statement released on Wednesday, ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke stressed that the union seeks the finalization of renegotiations based on the 2021 Nimi Briggs Committee’s Draft Agreement.

Key demands from ASUU include the release of salaries withheld during the 2022 strike, payment for staff on sabbatical, part-time, and adjunct appointments, as well as settling outstanding third-party deductions such as cooperative contributions. The union expressed frustration over the government’s delaying tactics, warning that this inaction is contributing to a crisis in the public university system.

ASUU also called for increased funding to revitalize public universities, the payment of Earned Academic Allowances, and the adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) to replace the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS). Additionally, the union is advocating for the implementation of visitation panel reports, the reinstatement of dissolved university Governing Councils, and a halt to the proliferation of universities by federal and state governments.

The union has warned that the government must address these issues within 14 days, starting from September 23, 2024, to prevent any potential industrial action.
