9mobile Rebrands to T2, Unveils “Bold New Chapter” in Nigerian Telecoms

Nigeria’s telecommunications provider, 9mobile, has officially rebranded to T2, marking the second name change in its history. The unveiling took place on Friday at the Eko Convention Centre, Lagos, a year after LH Telecommunication Limited acquired a 95.5 percent stake in the company.

The network, formerly known as Etisalat before its 2017 transformation to 9mobile, now embarks on what executives describe as a transformative new era.

Femi Banigbe, Chief Executive Officer of Emerging Markets Telecommunication Services Limited (EMTS), said the rebrand represents “the beginning of a bold new chapter” for the company.

“This is not just a brand unveiling, it is the beginning of a bold new chapter in our history. It is a declaration that we are no longer who we were, but we are becoming something greater. We are becoming something more ambitious,” Banigbe stated.

He explained that the change goes beyond a logo or tagline, reflecting a renewed mission to meet customers’ growing demands for speed, access, and relevance in an increasingly digital world. Banigbe praised Nigerians’ resilience and adaptability, adding that T2 remains proudly Nigerian and committed to evolving with the times.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, hailed mobile network operators (MNOs) for driving Nigeria’s rapid digital transformation from fewer than one million mobile lines in 2001 to over 220 million today, with broadband penetration approaching 50 percent.

“The MNOs have invested boldly, spending more than ₦75 billion in towers, fibre, and now 5G all without any government subsidy. The MNOs have powered our economy, contributing around 16 percent to our GDP, and creating millions of direct and indirect jobs,” Tijani noted.

Commending the T2 rebrand as a signal of readiness to innovate and compete, he urged the company to match its fresh identity with a renewed commitment to service excellence.

“Let this rebrand be more than a change of colours or new logo. Let it be a renewed commitment to innovation, to service excellence, and to the millions of Nigerians whose lives and businesses depend on your network every single day,” Tijani said.

The minister assured that the government will continue to work with industry players “bold enough to invest, agile enough to adapt, and visionary enough to embrace change before it is forced upon them.”
