On Saturday, a mass demonstration unfolded in the streets as thousands of presumed supporters of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) rallied against the governorship dispute involving Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, and his All Progressives Congress (APC) counterpart, Nasir Gawuna.
The protesters, advocating for a fair judgment from the apex court to validate the mandate of Kano people on Yusuf, gathered in the Rogo Local Government Area (LGA).
The protest began with a prayer for divine intervention, followed by a march where participants displayed placards bearing various inscriptions.
Unfortunately, the protest escalated into chaos, leading to the setting ablaze of a vehicle on the streets.
In response, the police promptly imposed a ban on all political gatherings or protests within and outside the metropolis.
As of December 21, 2023, the Supreme Court has reserved judgment in Yusuf’s appeal challenging the decisions of the Court of Appeal and the State Election Petitions Tribunal, which ousted him from office and declared Gawuna as the winner.
The five-member panel, presided over by Justice John Okoro, reserved the judgment following the adoption of brief arguments by the involved parties.
