Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, former Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Bola Tinubu, has asserted that no politician can win Nigeria’s presidency in 2027 without the support of the northern region.
In a video interview Baba-Ahmed, speaking alongside Professor Usman Yusuf, former NHIS Executive Secretary, emphasized that the North will soon decide its political path.
“In the next six months, the North will decide where it stands. If the rest of the country wants to join us, fine. If not, we will go our own way. One thing is clear: nobody can become president of Nigeria without northern support,” he stated.
He criticized the current state of governance, urging northerners to resist manipulation by divisive politicians as the 2027 elections approach.
“We want a government that understands our problems. After Buhari’s eight years, we became wiser. Now, we are in another government, and we are still crying. Is crying all we know how to do?” he asked.
Baba-Ahmed reflected on the impact of Boko Haram’s insurgency on all northern communities, stressing unity across ethnic and religious lines.
He warned against the marginalization of the North, stating that continued political exclusion would have national consequences.
“If they plan to rig the election, they should be careful. It won’t be good for Nigeria. The North is watching. Elders, masses, and interest groups will soon say ‘enough is enough.’”
Calling for a shift from identity politics, he urged the North to vote based on competence and integrity.
“We are tired of being deceived into voting based on religion or ethnicity. That era is over. We just want the right leader even if he falls from heaven someone who will solve our problems.”
He concluded by saying the North had learned from its past and would approach the next election with a renewed and deliberate strategy.
