President Bola Tinubu has set an ambitious goal for Nigeria to emerge as a leading global agricultural export nation by 2025. Represented by Abubakar Momoh, Minister of Regional Development, Tinubu made the announcement at the Road to South-South National Convergence event held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja on Tuesday.
At the event, the president unveiled the ‘Earn from the Soil’ initiative, aimed at transitioning Nigeria’s agriculture from subsistence-based to a vibrant, export-driven industry.
“This initiative is a powerful declaration that we are committed to turning our non-oil resources into collective prosperity,” Tinubu stated. “By 2025, Nigeria will be a leading agricultural export nation.”
The initiative seeks to revolutionize agricultural practices across the country while positioning the sector as a key driver of global economic contributions. Tinubu highlighted the untapped potential of the South-South region, emphasizing its natural resources and talent as critical to achieving the nation’s economic diversification goals.
“The South-South is open for business, just as the whole of Nigeria is ready for business,” the president said. “We are creating an ecosystem of opportunity, innovation, and sustainable growth.”
He also underscored the importance of youth and women in driving the program’s success, describing their energy and creativity as essential to Nigeria’s economic transformation.
Gift Johnbull, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (South-South), reiterated the region’s central role in the nation’s development, saying:
“The South-South is at the heart of our nation’s development. Its immense contributions and untapped potential position it as a critical driver of Nigeria’s transformation.”
The ‘Earn from the Soil’ initiative is expected to attract strategic investments and partnerships, leveraging Nigeria’s agricultural resources to foster sustainable economic growth and enhance non-oil revenue streams. Tinubu assured Nigerians of his administration’s commitment to restoring hope and delivering prosperity through innovative and inclusive economic strategies.
