Tinubu Approves ₦80bn for Alau Dam Reconstruction After Deadly Collapse

President Bola Tinubu has approved ₦80 billion for the reconstruction and expansion of the Alau Dam in Borno State, which collapsed in September 2024, triggering severe flooding that claimed over 150 lives and displaced at least 419,000 residents in Maiduguri.

Minister of Water Resources, Prof. Joseph Utsev, disclosed this during a briefing with State House correspondents after the year’s second Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Tuesday. Utsev, who also chairs the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Dams, emphasized the urgency of the project, confirming that the FEC is set to ratify the approval.

The committee, inaugurated on October 2, 2024, was tasked with assessing dams across Nigeria and recommending improvements. It includes ministers of Finance, Environment, Works, and Information, along with the National Security Adviser. So far, it has assessed 35 dams, identifying Alau Dam as critical due to its role in the 2024 disaster.

Rehabilitation efforts will commence with desilting work in December, while the first phase of reconstruction is targeted for completion by July 2025. The entire project is expected to take 24 months.

Located in Konduga Local Government Area, Alau Dam was built between 1984 and 1986 to impound a major reservoir on the Ngadda River, a tributary of Lake Chad. The reconstruction aims to strengthen flood control, enhance water supply, and improve irrigation systems in the region.
